Located on Florida’s west coast between the Gulf of Mexico, Clearwater Harbor and Old Tampa Bay, Clearwater is situated on a high coastal bluff, offering visitors and residents miles of beautiful beaches, natural wilderness and wildlife, abundant waterways and inlets, and a temperate climate. The county seat for Pinellas County, Clearwater is connected to the nearby cities of Tampa and St Petersburg by a causeway.
Clearwater was originally incorporated in 1891. The city has scene steady growth since the turn of the century with a population of nearly 110,000 currently. Clearwater was a major training base for US troops during WWII. In the late 1970’s Clearwater became the spiritual headquarters for the Church of Scientology. The Church and city have had a rocky relationship ever since.
There are many boat tours in Clearwater. Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise is one of the most popular with the kids. It’s fun for the adults too. Stroll the old-fashioned Downtown Clearwater Farmer's Market. Take the Jolley Trolley to Clearwater Beach, rated one of the best beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. You can make a day at Caladesi Island, on the northern most tip of Clearwater Beach, hiking trails through Florida wilderness, collect seashells or enjoy a picnic.
There are numerous attractions in Clearwater including the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the Florida Aquarium, Lowry Park Zoo, Florida Botanical Gardens, Pier 60, Pinellas Trail, the Clearwater Marina, and Moccasin Lake Nature Park. Local museums include Historic Fort Harrison, Indian Rocks Beach Historical Museum, Safety Harbor Historical Museum, Boatyard Village, and the Tarpon Springs Cultural Museum. Golfers can perfect their swing at Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club, Bayou Golf Club, Lansbrook Golf Club, and Belleview Biltmore Golf Academy. There’s also Captain Bligh’s Miniature Golf for the whole family.
Clearwater hosts the Ford Ironman World Championship now through 2010. Other events include the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, Fun N Sun Festival, Imagine International Film Festival and Clearwater Celebrate America. There is lots to do, but some of the best times are had doing nothing at all on the beach all day! Bring your sunscreen.
